TRAVEL HEALTH COVERGOPAPPROVEDBill your insurer, not your trip
Short answer

Often, yes. If you are insured with Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Bupa or GeoBlue, Guardians Dental in Myeongdong coordinates your visit through U-MEDI, an international medical facilitator. Your policy’s limits are checked before the visit and a guarantee of payment (GOP) is requested. When your insurer issues one, the clinic bills them directly. If not, you pay locally and leave with an English claim package for reimbursement.

Does travel insurance cover the dentist?

It depends on your policy. Many travel insurance plans cover emergency dental treatment only: sudden pain, a broken tooth or an accident, up to a set limit. Check-ups, whitening and cosmetic work are usually excluded. International health plans held by expats and long-stay visitors often include wider dental benefits.

Before you travel, look in your policy wording for “emergency dental” or “dental benefit” and note the limit. If in doubt, ask your insurer: they know your plan better than anyone.

Direct billing and the GOP, in plain words

A guarantee of payment (GOP) is a written confirmation from your insurer that it will pay the clinic for covered treatment. With a GOP in place, the clinic sends the bill to your insurer instead of you. Without one, you pay first and claim the money back.

At Guardians Dental, direct billing is available with Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Bupa and GeoBlue. U-MEDI, an international medical facilitator, handles the paperwork between the clinic and your insurer.

Step by step

  1. Send your insurance card. A photo of the front and back, your policy or member number, and your name exactly as on your passport, by WhatsApp or the booking form.
  2. We check your limits. Your exact coverage is confirmed and a GOP is requested from your insurer. For planned treatment, a few working days’ notice helps. If you are in pain, come anyway: we treat first and sort the paperwork after.
  3. Treatment, explained in English. Fees and anything your plan will not cover are confirmed in writing before we start.
  4. GOP approved: the clinic bills your insurer for the covered amount. Anything outside your cover, such as an excess, is settled at the desk.

No GOP? Pay locally, claim fast

Some plans do not issue a GOP for dental care, or need more time than your trip allows. In that case you pay at the clinic and we hand you everything an insurer usually asks for:

DocumentWhy insurers want it
Diagnostic letter with ICD-10 codesStates the diagnosis in the international coding insurers use
Itemized invoice in EnglishLists each procedure, tooth and fee
Receipt and payment proofShows what you actually paid, and how
Treatment recordDescribes what was done, if your insurer asks for detail

Claim as soon as you can: most insurers set a deadline for submitting claims.

TRICARE Select and Overseas

For TRICARE Select and TRICARE Overseas beneficiaries, we prepare an itemized claim package with diagnosis and procedure codes, ready for your reimbursement claim.

Before your visit, send: insurance card (front and back), policy or member number, passport name, your travel dates, and a sentence about the problem. See how a covered visit works.
