Short answer

Do scaling first and whitening a few days later. Scaling (about 40 minutes) removes the tartar and stains that would block the whitening gel. Whitening (about an hour) works best on clean teeth once your gums have settled. On a short trip, book scaling in your first days and whitening near the end.

Why the order matters

Whitening gel works on the surface of clean enamel. Tartar and surface stains act like a raincoat: the gel cannot reach the tooth underneath, and the result looks patchy. Scaling removes that layer.

Gums can be a little tender for a day after a thorough scaling. Giving them a short rest before whitening makes the whitening session more comfortable.

Sample plans by length of stay

Your staySuggested plan
2–3 daysCheck-up and scaling on day 1, whitening on your last full day. If gums are sensitive, we may suggest whitening only.
4–6 daysCheck-up and scaling early, whitening 2–3 days later. The ideal plan.
7 days or moreScaling early, whitening near the end, plus time for a small filling if the check-up finds one.

What a DIAwhite session is like

DIAwhite is our in-clinic whitening: a premium gel activated with blue LED light, applied in two sets, in about an hour. We protect your gums first, check sensitivity between the sets, and finish with a desensitising step.

Good to know: whitening lightens natural enamel only. Existing crowns, veneers and fillings keep their colour, so we check for these during the check-up.

The first 48 hours after whitening

Enamel is more porous for a short time after whitening and picks up colour more easily. For the next two days, choose “white” foods and drinks and skip the dark ones. Myeongdong makes this a fun challenge: we wrote a colour-coded street-food guide for exactly this.

  • Skip: coffee, black tea, red wine, cola, kimchi, tteokbokki, soy-heavy sauces.
  • Enjoy: milk-based drinks, rice, chicken, fish cake broth, egg bread, plain hotteok.
  • Sensitivity is common for a day or two and usually fades by itself.

Questions people ask

Can I do scaling and whitening on the same day?

It is possible, but we usually recommend a gap of a few days so gums settle and the result is more even. On a very short stay, ask us and we will judge it after the check-up.

How long does whitening last?

It varies with diet and habits. Coffee, tea and smoking shorten it. Regular cleaning helps it last longer.

Is whitening safe for sensitive teeth?

Usually, with care. We check sensitivity first, adjust the session and finish with desensitising treatment.
